General Notes: Husband - John Henry Rea

John Henry's wife Fanny died on 20 May 1889 from an ectopic pregnancy - leaving three very young children; these children were cared for by various members of the Rea family (particularly their Grandmother Rea ) until John Henry married (on 24.12.1892 St John's church New Clee) Norah Harriet Schollar (daughter of a coastguard in Grimsby) and they had two sons: Sutherland Schollar Rea 1893 (died at birth) and Newman Noel Rea b.1895; Norah was a loving stepmother to John Henry's three children by his first wife but left him before 1901 - it is said that she described him as a mean, tyrannical man (the census of 1901 lists Norah Harriett Rea as living with her son and sister at 11 Fountain St Hull). It is believed that John Henry Rea also had a son with a French woman (?Emmie Roux) when he was living in Germany: it is understood that the baby was sent away to a wet nurse at birth and later died.
John Henry Rea had a variety of jobs - managing clerk, commercial traveller, grocer's manager and manager of a colour works - before establishing (after his wife's death in 1889) several schools in Germany teaching English as a foreign language. He was based in Germany from c1900 - working as a translator and English language teacher (he was also a very active member of the English Club in Dusseldorf) until the outbreak of war in 1914 when he returned to the UK. For a time before he died he lived with his daughter Gwennie at 19 Blundell Avenue Cleethorpes but finally died of cerebral haemorrhage at 100 Scartho Road in Grimsby on 9 August 1920, the death was registered by his eldest son Henry Hamlyn Rea of 16 West Dock St Grimsby who inherited from his fathe r £50.16s.10d (there was no will).
Christening Holy Trinity, Hull Sept 5 1860.

General Notes: Child - Henry Hamlyn Rea

Henry does not appear in the 1901 census but then gets married in Grimsby, a busy port out of which Humber pilots operate, in 1907. My inference is that he missed the census because he was at sea. His wife was either, Alice Maud Moncaster or Sarah Watkin, but, at this point, I can't tell which.
