Claiborn C. Tinsley was born in Amherst Co, Virginia on 27 Dec 1807. His family moved to Kentucky when he was about 9. In 1839, at age 22 , he moved to Illinois, and in 1841 at age 45 he moved to Jefferson Co ., Iowa, where he was a successful farmer, member of the Baptist Church and a Democrat in politics.

Mary "Polly" Eller the daughter of David and Tabitha Judd Eller, was born in Wilkes Co., North Carolina on 20 Sep 1820. Her family moved to Wayne Co, Indiana in 1828. Mary married George Koons on 1Sep 1836 in Wayne Co., Indiana. She and her husband and her parents moved to Jefferson County, Iowa in 1838. Her husband died in 1839, and Mary married 2nd Claiborne C. Tinsley on 8 August 1842. They lived in Jefferson County Indiana the remainder of their lives. Mary and Claiborne had six children, five who lived to adulthood.
