About 1840 Dr. H.F. Peery allowed Abraham and Isaac Sands to be sole agent for his Dead Shot/Vermifuge medicine(to expel worms), which became a big seller.By 1851, A.B.&D Sands Druggists and Chemists, 100 Fulton St.(corner of William) was selling Sands's Sarsaparilla to cure rheumatism, ulcers, consumption, and female complaints, to name just a few of the claims. The" D" in the name was probably Abraham's brother, David. During the 1850's the firm sold "Dr. Wistar's Balsam of Wild Cherry", "Peruvian Febrifuge" and "Common Pasture Weeds". Some time between June 25, 1859 and May 19, 1860 the firm changed its name to A.B. Sands & Co. Abraham's brother, David, died on July 31, 1859. During the 1860's the company earned a fortune selling patent medicine for the cure of dysentery to the Union army. During this period competitors sprang up all along Fulton St. and elsewhere selling patent medicines. In 1874 the company filed in bankruptcy but was later reborn as A.B. Sands & Son Co. and was still in existence in 1916.However, it probably did not survive long after the passage of the federal Pure Food and Drugs Act of 1906, prohibiting some of their more extravagant medical claims.
