Mary's new husband, Sir Humphrey Howarth had properties at Cabalfa near the village of Clyro and at Maesllwch in Glasbury and was Member of Parliament for the County of Radnor (1722 - 1755). In 1738 he was also Governor of Barbados.

Unfortunately, Sir Humphrey had financial problems and mortgaged Maesllwch. The mortgage was foreclosed and the 'demesne afterwards purchased by Walter Wilkins. The Wilkins family, who had struck rich in India and then become bankers in Brecon, subsequently obtained a royal license to change their name to De Winton, and that family still live at what is known as Maesllwch Castle.
