General Notes: Husband - Roger Kemble

Founder of the acting Kembles. Procured from the Royal College of Arms an Armorial Ensign similar to the Herefordshire Kemble family Ensign "Sable on a bend ermine three leopard heads caboshed" since he was " unwilling to bear Armorial Ensigns without due authority" This source describes Roger as of Kentish Town in the Parish of St. Pancras.

General Notes: Child - Sarah Kemble

Baptismal certificate describes father of Sarah as "George" Kemble.

General Notes: Child - (George) Stephen Kemble

His mother, Sarah, acted the role of the (pregnant) Anne Boleyn in King Henry VIII on the night of his birth, then was rushed off to deliver him. His parents hoped he would become a chemist, but he resigned his apprenticeship and joined a travelling company of actors. He found engagements helped by the fame of his sister, Sarah Siddons. After his marriage he played parts opposite his wife. Virtually abandoned acting in favor of theatre management. He was stage manager at Drury Lane when his son Henry made his debut there as Romeo.

General Notes: Child - Charles Kemble

The first to use detailed historical sets and costumes on the English stage. Noted for his supporting roles in several Shakespeare plays, but at his best in comedy. He made his first recorded appearance as Orlando in Shakespeare's "As you like it" at Sheffield in 1792 or 1793. His London debut occurred on 21 Apr 1794 in "MacBeth". He played Malcolm to his brother John Philip's "Macbeth". In comedy, he was frequently supported by his wife. He became manager of Covent Garden but nearly went bankrupt until his daughter Fanny made her debut there in 1829 . Visits to the US with his daughter Fanny in 1832 and 1834 also brought acclaim. Due to increasing deafness, he retired from the stage in Dec 1836 but gave readings of Shakespeare until 1840. After retirement , he was given the post of Examiner of Plays, a Government position he resigned in 1840 to his son, John Mitchell, a distinguished philologist.

I have attached a map of London's West End showing the location of Kemble St., Drury Lane, which his brother, John Philip, managed, Covent Gardens, which he was a part owner of, with his brother, and the location of his home.

General Notes: Husband - William Kemble

In various Charters the name Kemble occurs, as Kemele, or Cemele, and in Domesday Book, Chemele. It is probably compounded of the Cornish Chi, Che, .Ke (Welsh Coe), meaning a house or field (primarily an enclosure) and the Celtic Meale (Welsh Moel) a round hill bare at the top - the name Kemble would therefore mean "Hillhouse". Not far from the River Loire, in France, and north of it, is a town or village named "Chenele", and not far again from it is another named "Seagry". About 300 B.C. a body of Celts came from this district in France, down the Loire in boats and crossed to England and came up the Bristol Channel, and made their way across country into Wiltshire, where they settled down. Now Kemble in Wiltshire is about eight miles from Malmesbury, and Seagry is about five miles the other side of Malmesbury. The natives for miles round are Celts to look at. Mr. H.W. Kemble of "Knock", " Broadford", Isle of Skye, thoroughly believes this to be the origin of the name of Kemble in Wiltshire. The following dates prove the way the name was spelt from early times: A.D. 682, was called Kemele by Cedwalla, King of Wessex. In the Domesday Book (1066-1100) it is called Chemele. In 1404 Thomas Kemele was vicar of the Parish Seagry. In 1450 Kemell of Cammell and William Kemble, M.P. for Cricklade. In 1525 William Kembyll owned lands at Grundwell. In 1547 James Kembill, 1573 William Kemble, do. Grundwell is close to Widhill and Stratton, St. Margaret's, where the various Kembles had resided for generations. The Herefordshire Kembles used the three leopard coat of arms that is said to have been granted to George Kemble by William Camden, Clarencieu x King-at-Arms in the reign of Queen Elizabeth (1533-1603). George Kemble was of Wydell or Widhill in Wiltshire, near the town of Kemble, which is now in Gloucestershire.

By his son, John, William had a grandson, John Kemble (1599-1679) who became a priest and was executed for his Catholic faith. On October 20 , 1970 he was cannonized as a saint.

General Notes: Child - George Kemble

George purchased Pembridge Castle in Welsh Newton and made it habitable in 1675. It had been a Royalist garrison and had suffered severely during a siege and surrender in 1644. Pembridge had a chapel where St. John Kemble would say mass, although Roman Catholic masses had been outlawed by Statute 27 issued during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. It is said that the Catholic Earls/Marquesses of Worcester were allowing the law to be openly flouted.

George is said to have been granted the Kemble 3 leopard coat of arms by William Camden, King-at-arms in the reign of Queen Elizabeth I.
