General Notes: Husband - Hubert Johnson

Hubert attended Hull Grammar School and in 1871 the family were living at 89 Walker St Hull in a house which Hubert's Aunt Sarah (on his mother's side) had bought - at this point Hubert was working as a shipbuilders clerk. In 1881 the family had moved into 4 Crystall St (again owned by Sarah Carrington). Hubert Johnson was a prominent figure in Hull at the beginning of the twentieth century: he was Sheriff of Hull 1912-13 and was Lord Mayor of Hull 1917-18 (to commemorate his mayoralty he endowed a university scholarship at Hull grammar School). Hubert was the president of Hull Literary Club and was closely connected to it for more than twenty years; he was also a member of the Authors Club in London (founded in 1991) and was one of the founders of the Authors Lodge. He was a member of the East Riding Antiquarian Society for a number of years and was involved with the publication of some of their research. He and his brother Walter occupied the Master's Chair of the Humber Lodge of Freemasons in 1910-12. Hubert and his wife Mary Jane were living at 37 Poudrill St in 1891 (living with them at this time was a nephew Harry E Briggs b.1884, who in 1901 was working as an 'oil colour assistant' possibly for Hubert Johnson) and by 1901 they had moved to 78 Park St: at both residences they had a live-in servant . In 1908, 1913 and 1921 Hubert and Mary Johnson were living at St Botolph's (presumably named after Boston Stump), The Park, Hull (tel.no= Hull53). At the time of Hubert Johnson's marriage he was still working as a 'marine engineer's clerk' but between then and 1891 he set up business with his brother Walter Johnson b.1861 (who had been working as a commercial clerk) to create the firm W. & H. Johnson - oil merchants and paint manufacturers. This firm was based at National Works 202 High St Hull up to 1913 it developed and expanded into a large, successful company - later becoming Johnson Bros Paints which in 1940 was at Cleveland Works and 2A North Walls Queens Docks Hull.
It is not known how much knowledge the two brothers had of the oil industry prior to the establishment of the firm - some of the books which the firm held were:-
Textbook of Inorganic Chemistry, 1899
Chemical Recipes, 1896
The Practical Polish and Varnish Maker,1892
Painters' Colours, Oils and Varnishes: A Practical Manual, 1892
Manuale degli Olii per Lubrificazione, 1895
Science and The Manufacturer, 1906
Paint Making and Colour Grinding by Charles L Uebele, 1913
They also had various books on foreign languages - Norwegian, French, Danish, Italian and various code books to enable them to communicate long distance (eg telegraphic Codes adapted for use of Financiers, Merchants, Shipowners, Brokers etc, 1883 and later on the 6th edition of Five Letter ABC Telegraphic Codes)
Hubert Johnson died in the second quarter of 1931, aged 74 (his brother Walter died in the first quarter of 1931).
