He was also known as Hugh Fychan of Cydweli. According to "Annals and Antiquities of the Counties and County Families of Wales" by Thomas Nicholas (2nd Ed. 1872), Hugh was Gentleman Usher in the Court of Henry VII and fought a duel against Sir James Parker, killing Sir James, "concerning the arms and 'scutcheons of his family". John Stow described the duel in his book “Annales of England”. According to Stow, the duel was a joust and it occurred in May 1492 at Richmond, Surrey. See https://www.british-history.ac.uk/vch/surrey/vol3/pp533-546 . However, I have discovered that there were actually two Hugh Vaughans receiving favors from Henry VII. The other was Lord of Littleton Manor in Middlesex near London. See Hugh Vaughan (abt.1460-1536) | WikiTree FREE Family Tree . Michael Powell Siddons, appointed by the Crown to be Wales Herald of Arms Extraordinary between 1994-2010 asserts in his book “”The Development of Welsh Heraldry” Vol. 2 (1996) pg. 570, that it was Littleton Hugh who was Gentleman Usher. Assuming this to be true, it would imply that it was Littleton Hugh who fought the joust, since Stow describes the jouster as Gentleman Usher. This is likely correct and Nicholas is wrong since, according to Siddons, Littleton Hugh’s arms first appear in 1491, the year before the joust and Stow asserts that the dispute which lead to the joust was over Hugh’s heraldry. Hugh “Fychan”, by contrast was the founder of a much larger estate centered in Golden Grove, Carmarthenshire, Wales. His wife was important to his developing fortunes. Her great grandfather, Gruffydd ap Nicholas , died at Mortimer’s Cross supporting the Tudor cause in the War of the Roses and her grandfather, Owen’s brother, Thomas Hynaf ap Gruffydd , was the father of Rhys ap Thomas , one of Henry VII’s most important supporters in the battle of Boswell Field. He and his children became some of the most powerful people in Wales. Hugh had the support of Rhys ap Thomas’s grandson Rhys ap Gruffydd and his son, Walter, was able to marry Rhys’ granddaughter, Katherine verch Griffith ap Rhys . I believe Golden Grove Hugh was, actually, living in Wales and not doing jousts in Surrey England. In 1531, Henry VII appointed Hugh to collect rents accruing to the Crown in Kidwelly, Carmarthenshire, Wales.
