daughter of John Warner of Swansea

General Notes: Child - Susanna Eleanora Vaughan

The story/rumor goes that young John Vaughan, Susanna's half brother, later to inherit the Vaughan estates, consisting of more than 50,000 acres, arranged to make a grand tour of the Continent with his friend John Campbell, of Scotland, afterwards created Baron Cawdor. Under those circumstances it was customary for the two friends to make wills, each bequeathing the sum total of his possessions to his friend and travelling companion. This was done in order to prevent delay and seizure of property by foreign officials in the event of one or other of the travellers dying suddenly whilst abroad. The canny Scot did not destroy John Vaughan's will upon his return to England and then, produced it when John Vaughan died intestate in 1804, thereby inheriting the Vaughan estates of in excess of 50,000 acres, to the exclusion of John' s surviving half sister, Mrs. Susannah Watkins.

In this manner the Golden Grove mansion passed out of the possession of the Vaughan family. The Cawdors rebuilt the house on higher ground, about 1 kilometer from the site of the original houses between 1826-1832. The former site, has continued to be used as a walled kitchen garden and has been modified several times until the present day. The rebuilt mansion was used as satellite for the Carmarthen College of Technology and Art, but has now been abandoned and is falling into ruin. It is on the grounds of the Golden Grove county park.

General Notes: Husband - Roger Vaughan

This branch of the Vaughan family was founded by ROGER VAUGHAN, second son of Sir Roger Vaughan of Tretower. He was possibly the Roger Vaughan of Tyle-glas who was pardoned on 9 July 1491, and figures again in Henry VIII's pardon roll (1509) as Roger ap Roger of Tyle-glas, or Roger Vaughan of Talgarth. He was granted the offices of steward and receiver of the lordship of Dinas, 17 January 1509, and was dead before 25 September 1514, when those offices were granted to Sir Griffith ap Rhys. His wife was Joan, daughter of Robert Whitney by Constance, daughter of James, lord Audley. The Vaughans of Tregunter descended from his second son, Thomas Vaughan. The heir, WATKIN VAUGHAN, married Joan, daughter of Ieuan Gwilym Vaughan of White Peyton. The above taken from https://biography.wales/article/s-VAUG-POR-1475
