General Notes: Husband - John Cline

John Cline first appears as a head of household in the 1840 census for Smyth Co., Va. At the time of the 1830 census, Smyth Co. did not exist and was encompassed within Wythe Co. and Washington Co. There were several Clines in Wythe County, including a head of household named John Cline, but this is a much older man who we will discuss later. John Cline consistently identifies his birth place as Virginia but his year of birth is not consistent from census to census. In 1850, he states his age as 47, which would mean that he was born about 1803. In 1860, he gives his age as 50, which would mean that he was born about 1810. In 1870 he gives his age as 65, which would mean that he was born about 1805. In 1880, he gives his age as 74, which would mean that he was born about 1806. He gives Virginia as his parents' birth place in this census. Some sources give him a birth date of 1798, but, as we will discuss, I think this date is too early. In the 1840 census , John is the only Cline in Smyth Co. There are still several others in Wythe Co. The 1820 census identifies Evensham, the former name of Wythville, as the location of John and Nicholas Cline. It is also significant that John's wife, Sophia, is from Wythe Co. and they were married there. There is no other similar concentration of Clines in the vicinity so I am convinced that John is from Wythe Co., as some of the sources recite. In the 1810 census, the earliest available for Wythe Co., there are five heads of household with the Surname Cline: two Peters, Nicholas Snr., Nicholas Jr., and John. I believe all of these families are related. Nicholas Senior is the well established founder of this clan in Wythe Co. The 1810 census only lists two Cline heads of household with children age 0 to 9, John Cline has one male child and one female child in this category and Nicholas Junior has three male children and one female child in this category. Although a lot of research has been done on this family, I have only found partial listings of the children of Nicholas Junior (b abt 1775) and John M.(b abt 1 770). It is known that Nicholas Junior had two male children, Elijah (b 1802) and Jacob (b. unknown) but I have not found a reference to the third male child listed in the 1810 census. His female child, listed in that census, was named Melinda (b 1804). As you can see from the dates, it is certainly possible that John Cline is this third son; however, primarily because of the name John, I favor Nicholas Junior's brother John M. Cline as the father of the John Cline who moved to Smyth Co. Available research lists eight children for John M. Cline. The oldest male, Jefferson, is listed as born in 1810. Although this could be the child listed in the 1810 census, for reasons discussed below, I believe Jefferson was born after the census was taken. None of the known female children of John M. Cline is old enough to be the female child listed in the 1810 census, so I believe that there is both a missing male and female child and that the missing male child is John Cline. It is true that the 1820 census only lists two male children for John M. and that these would be accounted for by his known male children, Jefferson and Michael (b 1819) but Nicholas Junior is shown in the 1820 census as not having any male children and Nicholas and John' s father, Nicholas senior is shown as having two male children age ten to fifteen and two male children age seventeen to twenty five. I believe these children are Nick Jr.'s three boys and John (John M's boy ) sent to help their grandfather on the farm. This hypothesis is further supported by the 1830 census which shows John M. with four male children, one age 5 to 9, Granville (thought to be born in 1826), one age 10 to 15, Michael, one age 15 to 19, Jefferson (assuming my surmise is correct and that he was born in late 1810 or early 1811), and one 20 to 29, which is the unaccounted for male child which I believe to be John, the oldest. Why other genealogists have lost track of him I do not know, although it may relate to the fact that he moved to Smyth Co. and the others remained in the Wythville area. At any rate, pending further research, I am listing his father as John M. Cline. In any case, his grandfather was, almost certainly, Nicholas Cline (Klein) Senior (b. abt 1745 in Germany).
