General Notes: Husband - James Murray

James moved to North Carolina from Maryland after 1750. He was already
married to his first wife, whose name is unknown.
James first appears in records with a land grant in 1755. He had a son named James by this first wife, born 1752 and died March 1821. The 1790 census for Orange County lists only three James Murray heads of household. These are two. The third would be Elizabeth's brother (1747 -1805). One of these is, presumably, the James Murray who is listed as a Regulator or Regulator sympathizer .
The Regulators were active in the late 1760's protesting British taxes , fees, etc., through force of arms if necessary. They met the British in the Battle of Alamance on May 16, 1771 and were crushed. North Carolinians argue that this, and not the Battle of Lexington and Concord, several years later (April 19, 1775), was the first battle of the Revolutionary War.

"Robert K Krick's LEE'S COLONELS lists no John A. Murrays as Majors or Colonels in the Army of Northern Va or in the other field commands of the Confederate Army. There is a Lieutenant, John Adair Murray, who served as an Aide de Camp on the staff of General General John B. ( Prince John) McGruder. It could be that John Murrary was called "Colonel" after the war given his standing as a staff officer." -- Dan Morrow
